Wishes in Taiwan - VR Design
Timeline: January - April 2024
Tools: Procreate, GravitySketch for VR and Blender
Background
For my course GBDA 413 - Special Topics in Design and Society Virtual Reality, it was the first of its kind to exist. In this course, there are three projects which involve the use of VR (virtual reality) and a HMD (head-mounted display). Since there was no formal syllabus, our goal was to create an object, character and lastly an environment that incorporates everything together with the VR headset.
Project Story
My story for my project is me traveling to Taiwan to attend the lantern festival in the Pingxi village. I’ve always wanted to attend a lantern festival and visit Taiwan. After learning about that this is offered in Taiwan, I knew it is something I must do in the future (hopefully next year after working for a bit!). The key object in my project is the lantern I am releasing into the sky. It has my wishes written on it, one of the wishes is written in Chinese which is dedicated to my grandpa who passed away in September. I wrote how I miss him a lot and hope that he is happy and at peace. The second wish I wrote is in English, hoping that 2024 would be a good year since 2023 wasn’t the best year for me. I also wish for a post grad job since I am graduating very soon. My character is myself in a position with both my arms up as I am releasing my lantern into the sky. I added details that highlight my personality such as a. bread keychain, hair bow and hoop earrings. Lastly, since the lantern festival is in Pingxi Village, it was only fitting to recreate that area. I made a small version of the village while including key features of the village such as Chinese signs that has the stores name, the colourful architecture and train track. I personally would like to achieve this dream one day and do believe that my scene will reflect my experience there in the future.
